Time Magazine Editor: We’re Journalists, We’ll Decide

Black Five comments on Time Magazine’s decision to run a “global warming” cover modeling Iwo Jima. Hasn’t gone over all that well with veterans.  The real diamond in the dirt is a comment made by Time managing editor Richard Stengel regarding the role of the press in reporting the news.

“I think since I’ve been back at the magazine, I have felt that one of the things that’s needed in journalism is that you have to have a point of view about things,” Stengel said. “You can’t always just say ‘on the one hand, on the other’ and you decide. People trust us to make decisions. We’re experts in what we do. So I thought, you know what, if we really feel strongly about something let’s just say so.”

It’s been pretty obvious to me that we’ve long moved away from the “objective journalism” standard and into “advocacy journalism”, it’s just interesting to see the media own up to it.  In the case of “global warming”, the Time Cover makes it clear that they see this as the Iwo Jima of this generation.  Never mind that they have no idea what Iwo Jima was, or meant.

Go to the Black Five post and read the veterans’ reactions and comments.  Michelle Malkin has a picture of the Time Magazine cover, and also an alternative Iwo Jima inspired image that better fits the situation.

  1. hi sir/ madam,

i’m really glad to find a site like this. inspiring to me. quoting from your article,”if we really feel strongly about something let’s just say so.”

but what’s the point of saying so if nobody assures or even correct your views?

and i’d been believing so deeply into building a world that’s not only better to live in but IDEAL to live in.

sadly nobody cares to even see what i have got to offer back in Malaysia.. a country so small compared to the world beyond us.

i am a blogger who enjoys reflecting upon things i interact with daily both online and offline and easily got inspired to create simple blogs with things i believe in.

hopefully i can get a mentor to comment even a 3-word-comment on my blog post..

anyway i know it’s more than a wishful thinking. everybody is busy in this world with their own agendas. and i understand that deeply.

just trying my luck to get a feedback.

someday i’ll prove the world wrong for not trying to give others a chance to shine and to believe that the world can indeed be ideal to live in!

    sincerely,
    my visions my ideals.
